General Information: The Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) Department of Biology and Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program in Mathematics and Science Education (MSE) is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor in biology education research beginning August 2025. We are searching for individuals with scholarly expertise in the broad focal areas of disciplinary-based biology education research or science education research with a strong foundation in biology content.

The tenure home for the position will be in the Department of Biology. Faculty will also be affiliated with the Ph.D. Program in Mathematics and Sciences Education housed in the College of Basic and Applied Sciences. The individual hired will be appointed into a full-time, academic year (9-month) tenure-track position starting August 2025. Rank and salary commensurate with education and experience. Opportunities for summer teaching and research for additional pay are available. A competitive start-up package will be provided to support establishing an independent, collaborative research program.
Qualifications/Requirements: Required Qualifications:
• Ph.D. in biology education, science education, biology, or related discipline OR evidence of completion of such degree by the summer of 2025
• Evidence of completion of a minimum of 18 graduate-level course hours in biology or a closely-related life science discipline
• Record of or potential to initiate and sustain a strong research program in the field
• Track record of interacting creatively, collaboratively, and productively with multiple, diverse audiences

Desirable Qualifications
• Record of or potential to publish high-quality work in the field of biology education
• Record of or potential to attract external funding
• Evidence of implementation of research-based, high-quality teaching
• Disciplinary expertise and experience in either animal physiology or botany
Responsibilities: Research Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to pursue an active research agenda with demonstrated independence in thinking and the ability to work across disciplines. The successful candidate will develop a strong, extramurally funded, and collaborative research program in biology education research or science education research. The candidate will be expected to mentor doctoral students in completing dissertation projects in the Biology Education Research focal area of the Ph.D. Program in Mathematics and Sciences Education.

Teaching Responsibilities: The successful candidate will have the opportunity to teach undergraduate courses in biology and graduate courses in education research with both areas aligned with their area of expertise. We welcome candidates with disciplinary expertise in any area of biology, but those with disciplinary expertise or teaching experience in animal physiology or botany may be particularly desirable.

Service Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to serve as an active member of the University and professional communities.
