General Information: The Suissa lab in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated research and lab manager to join our team ( The broad research of the lab aims to explore how the diversity of life evolved on our planet. Using ferns as a study system, we ask how organisms build their bodies, how they function, and how complex structures evolve across deep time. Beyond the lab, we apply our research and expertise in the field to communicate scientific knowledge to the broader community. The successful candidate will assist in research projects and manage laboratory operations. The specific projects that the applicant works on will depend on their skills and interests.

Position details:
• Salary commensurate with experience based on university pay grades
• Start date: May 2024.
• Funding is available for an initial 1 year with possibility of extension.

Qualifications/Requirements: • Bachelor’s degree in biology, botany, evolution, ecology, or related field.
• Experience with microscopy, physiology, or other lab work is preferred but not required.
• Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

Responsibilities: -Conducting laboratory and field experiments in plant histology, microscopy, and physiology.
-preserving plant tissue in formalin or acroelin-based fixatives
-sectioning plant material using sliding and rotary microtome
-mounting slides following standard histology protocols
-staining slides
-microscopy using Zeiss M2, V20, Stemi 508k
-cultivating plants
-using a Licor 6800
-coding in R
-preparing reports, writing portions of manuscripts, contributing in lab meeting

-Maintaining laboratory equipment
-ordering supplies/materials
-keeping a chemical inventory
-training students on lab safety and equiptment use
-mentoring students
